Dar es Salaam.Water Development and Management Institute (WDMI), formerly known as Water Resources Institute (WRI) was established in the year 1974, being a unit in the Ministry of Water and Energy. The aim was to meet the need for middle-level water technicians under the former National massive 20-years Rural Water Supply Programme (1971-1991). In 1980 the name of the Institute was changed to Rwegarulila Water Resources Institute (RWRI).
On 22nd August 2008 former name of the Institute was changed to Water Development and Management Institute (WDMI) following a transformation of organisational status from a unit in the Ministry of Water to an Executive Agency
The aim of Water Development and Management Institute is to develop and provide expertise required in the water sector through training, consultancy, and research under the policy guidelines of the Ministry of Water.
Vision
The vision of WDMI is to be centre of excellence for providing technical education and training, conducting research and providing consultancy services for integrated development and management of water resources in Africa.
Mission
The mission of WDMI is to provide quality training, research, consultancy and other services to all water sector stakeholders and to develop WDMI by using modern techniques of training and promoting appropriate technology.

The Institute offers training programs leading to award of Basic Technician Certificate and Technician Certificate in the following areas of specialization:

Other Courses
Program Leading to National Vocational Award Level 1, 2 and 3
The Institute offers training programs leading to National Vocational Award Level 1, 2 and 3 in vocational (artisanal) occupations applicable in the water services industry. NVA1 stage is the first, followed by NVA2 stage and finally the NVA3 stage. NVA1 stage can be completed successfully within two academic years, and each of NVA2 and NVA3 stages can be completed successfully within one academic year.
A student who completes successfully the NVA1 stage and is unable to continue with studies or fails to complete successfully the NVA2 stage will be awarded the NVA1 Certificate; likewise a student who completes successfully the NVA2 stage and is unable to continue with studies or fails to complete successfully the NVA3 stage will be awarded the NVA2 Certificate.
Continuing Education/ Professional Development Courses
The Institute offers several short-term continuing education/ professional development courses which are usually non-accredited. The prospective participant can apply for admission to a course chosen from the list of options or an organization can make a special request for a made to order (tailor-made) course. These courses are aimed at enabling the participant to learn up-to-date skills required for performing the tasks of his current occupation or to acquire additional skills required for performing the tasks in his occupation or to learn the skills required in a different occupation he wants to enter. Details on course titles, contents, target participants, required minimum qualifications, duration, dates and fees are available in a separate document which will be provided whenever the courses are available.
Admission and Applications
1. ORDINARY DIPLOMA
The minimum admission qualification for entry to Ordinary Diploma studies is possession of Technician Certificate in the relevant field. There is no indirect entry route.
2. HIGHER DIPLOMA
DIRECT ENTRY
The minimum admission qualifications for direct entry are as follows:
Holder of Ordinary Diploma in Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering, Hydrogeology & Well Drilling, Hydrology & Meteorology, Water Laboratory Technology, Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, and other fields related to Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering with minimum cumulative GPA (NTA4-6) of 2.7;
OR
Holder of Full Technician Certificate (FTC) in Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering, Hydrogeology & Well Drilling, Hydrology & Meteorology, Water Laboratory Technology, Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, and other fields related to Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering with minimum average score of 3.0 points based on the following conversion scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2;
OR
Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (ACSE) with principal pass in Mathematics and Physics and a subsidiary pass in Chemistry or Geography with a minimum total score of 3.5 points based on the following conversion scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, S=0.5 and F=0
INDIRECT ENTRY
Candidates whose qualifications fall slightly short of direct entry requirements can enter through passing the pre-entry course. The minimum admission qualifications for pre-entry course are as follows:
Holder of Ordinary Diploma in Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering, Hydrogeology & Well Drilling, Hydrology & Meteorology, Water Laboratory Technology, Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, and other fields related to Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering with minimum cumulative GPA (NTA4-6) of 2.0;
OR
Holder of Full Technician Certificate (FTC) in Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering, Hydrogeology & Well Drilling, Hydrology & Meteorology, Water Laboratory Technology, Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, and other fields related to Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering with minimum average score of 2.0 points based on the following conversion scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2;

Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (ACSE) in combination of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; or Physics, Biology and Chemistry; or Economics, Geography and Mathematics; or Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science; or Physics, Geography and Mathematics; with two principal passes and a subsidiary pass; with a minimum total score of 2.5 points based on the following conversion scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, S=0.5 and F=0
