Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy-Moshi

Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy, Moshi, REG/HAS/074, Private institution with full registration, Kilimanjaro, Full.Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy (KSP) evolved from ELCT Infusion Units Project which was concentrating in conducting three months short course training for local production of IV fluids in both public and FBO owned hospitals. In 2002 the first batch of 12 students was admitted to pursue a certificate programme in pharmaceutical sciences under the Ministry of Health. It is obvious that the KSP has evolved from the earlier role and functions it played in the delivery of cost-effective IV fluids to the current role of investing in pre-service technical training and education in the pharmacy profession.

In order to meet the current requirement in technical training under the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) act, KSP, using NACTE guidelines has pioneered and prepared competence-based modular program leading to the award of Basic Technician Certificate, Technician Certificate and Ordinary Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology. This gives KSP mandate to conduct own examinations and grant own awards as approved by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE). The first intake using the new modular programme was admitted in 2008.

Additionally, KSP in collaboration with Purdue University started an Advanced Training in Industrial Pharmacy in 2008. This training under Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy – Industrial Pharmacy Teaching Unit (IPTU) is an Advanced Training Program in Drug Development, Drug Manufacturing, Regulatory & Quality Compliance.

Programs Offered

Short Courses

1. IV Course — Three months training on hospital production of infusions (July to October – once every year)
2. DDP Course — One month training on compounding
3. Eye-Drop Courses — Six weeks training on production of eye drops
4. Continuous Education — for personnel who had already attended a Three Month I.V course and they are still working in the hospital production unit. This is done in three ways:
5. One month refresher course (To be arranged individually)
6. International symposium on hospital production of drugs – every two years.
7. On the job training through supervision and monitoring of professional Performance during our yearly visits to the hospital production unit.

Long Courses

1. Basic Technician Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences — Admission to the programme will be open to holders of a Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSSE) with a minimum of D score in Chemistry or Biology, Mathematics and English.
2. Technician Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences — Admission to the programme will be open to holders of a Basic Technician Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences
3. Ordinary Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences — Admission to the programme will be open to holders of a Technician Certificate or equivalent qualification in Pharmaceutical Sciences/Technology.

Admission and Applications

Students are required to abide to the laid down regulations and by-laws of the school during their whole period of their study. The general and academic guidelines as outlined by the school and the Ministry of Health will be given to the students on arrival.

How to apply

Interested candidates working in church hospitals should apply, preferably through their hospital administration. The hospital administration will then apply to the school. Private and non-church candidates should apply directly to the school.

Intakes

There are a limited number of candidates for each intake. The school started with a maximum number of 30 students.? Training will commence in September of every year. All applications should be in place by the end of March every year.

Advanced Training Courses

Industrial Pharmacy Advanced Training Program (IPTU)

The purpose of this advanced training program is to provide in-depth level education/ training in the important aspects of Drug Development, Drug Manufacturing, Regulatory and Quality Compliance in the Pharmaceutical industry. In this way, participants/ students will have an opportunity to improve their knowledge of drug development, drug manufacturing, regulatory and compliance issues and to explore careers in these exciting areas.

Eligibility Requirements: An applicant for this program must be a graduate or holder of at least a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Biochemistry, or Chemistry or Microbiology and Food technology industries.

Preferences: Applicants who are employed in the Manufacturing Pharmaceutical Industry and or who wish to have a career in Pharmaceutical analysis. Also those in Regulatory affairs in the Public or Private sector. Applicants from Community Pharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy and recent Graduates who wish to specialize in Industrial Pharmacy may apply. They may need a foundation course to provide needed background information.
